Case Study #3: Ryan Halligan
Ryan Halligan was a 13-year-old boy who was bullied because of his slower physical and intellectual development. Even though Ryan caught up developmentally with his peers by fourth grade, he was still bullied. Rumors that he was gay spread around the school and the bullying got so bad that Ryan didn't even want to go to school anymore.
Ryan had few friends, but over the summer he began an internet relationship with one of the popular girls from his school. He shared intimate details with her as he thought their relationship was blossoming. However, when school began and he approached his girlfriend in real life, she told him (in front of her friends) that he was a loser and everything she had said to him was a lie. She had shared their intimate conversations with her friends and they all laughed at Ryan. Humiliated, Ryan hanged himself.
